Last September Folch launched Acid House Barcelona, a center located in Poblenou and a new way of understanding design. Defined as a creative hub for the city of Barcelona, it unites design and education with business strategy under one roof. Acid House Barcelona is a project in collaboration with adidas Originals, Avanti Studio, Elisava, Nomad Coffee, Offfest, Vice & White Horse.
“We decided to create something that could interact openly in a new way with many brands and talented people from around the world, breaking the rules and turning the classical idea of a business on its head.”
Rafa Martínez, COO, Partner & Brand Strategist, Folch
To launch this new project, Folch presents a new typeface that reflects the character and concept of Acid House Barcelona: Acid Grotesk. Named after the transgressive music genre, this typeface embodies the fluid, energetic and hybrid nature of the hub and was designed so it can be used for both digital and physical communications.
Acid Grotesk has a unique character, combining a robust look with smooth curves and rounded vertex to get a more fluid and dynamic appearance. This new typeface is adaptable and recognizable in any framework, applied to books, posters, the Acid House Barcelona website and the space itself.
“The personality of this typeface resides in its smooth curves and rounded vertex, characteristics that represent the more fluid, rounded principles of Acid House Barcelona.”
Josep Puy, Art Director & Senior Designer at Folch
Beyond its functionality, Acid Grotesk has a light, playful touch with the inclusion of a smiley to the character set. It also includes several Opentype functions such as fractions, old style figures and case-sensitive forms with which the designer can adapt the shape of the letter to achieve the maximum design requirements.
“The typeface includes several OpenType functions such as stylistic sets, fractions, old style figures and case-sensitive forms with which the designer can adapt the shape of the letter to meet the requirements of the design.”
Pablo Fernández, Junior Designer, Folch
Available in different weights and displayed in 507 characters, it is capable of adapting to headlines, texts and displays, developing a diverse visual language that captures the essence of the initiative. Acid Grotesk has a unique stylistic set, the set nº11, in which all accents and symbols are changed to a very fine weight while the rest of characters maintain their weight.
