Speculative Design Proposal
Speculative Design Proposal
We were commissioned by Puig to develop the packaging for the Comme des Garçons’ Black Pepper fragrance sales case. While our proposal, appreciated and liked by the client, was not produced in the end, we still feel, as always, that it is beneficial to communicate the concept and process behind our speculative design ideas.
To rethink the design of the packaging we thought about returning to the essential element of the perfume, focusing on the raw material: the black pepper. Starting from the formal and organic shape of a grain of black pepper, we launched a process of transition from the physical to the abstract.
We focused on studying the geometries that structure a grain of black pepper, deconstructing and then reassembling it with new materials and a new profile. Next, we reimagined its inner structure, hollowing it out, ready to host the various components that compose the fragrance, as if fossilised inside.
The introduction of magnets inside allowed us to simplify the opening and closing of the grain-body, dividing the structure into two geometric halves. Moreover, thanks to a weight placed on one side of the polygon, we thought we could better expose the product once opened, ensuring greater stability and functionality.
For the external structure, to enhance the volume and distinctive design, we considered a high-quality silky black truffle coloured texture, along with serigraphed lettering. For the interior, we incorporated a high-density foam to completely fill the hollow, providing a snug, satisfying fit for the fragrance shapes.
