With our background in the editorial field, designing and conceptualising publishers for brands like Apartamento, Metal or Odiseo, we created DREAM, a biannual magazine and digital platform that observes objects from fixation and curiosity. Born from its collaborators’ imagination, DREAM contemplates the relationships we have with the objects and materials that surround us.
As an art director, Cristina has always been in close contact with objects and still lifes, resulting in a special relationship with both entities. DREAM explores this fascination, and serves as a space for reflexion: what makes us treasure certain objects and degrade others? How does one express him/herself artistically through volume and materiality? Alongside Cristina and Txema, Folch conceptualised these ideas into the publishing and digital environment.
Dedicated to the love for objects, balance and immateriality – volume 2 is an upgrade from the first issue. Featuring a curated scope of artists, photographers and writers sharing the fascination of the matter.
For the first issue DREAM collaborated with a series of talented artists. There’s Katerina Jebb, scanning objects to see right through them, John Divola, taking the reader through the empty sets of The X-Files, Tom Brown, who created still lives devoted to his unborn son for the launching issue of the magazine, alongside many more.
Whereas the magazine converts objects into protagonists through imagery, reflective texts and fragments of literature, the possibilities of a digital environment open up space for a more dynamic narration and the appearance video and human characters. It includes videos by various collaborating artists, such as Dani Fortuny, Manuel Rodriguez, Nur Casadevall and Ernesto Artillo.
“DREAM is precisely my dream: the object that my mind has been conceiving for years, feeding on all the emotions that objects have produced in me.”
Cristina Ramos, Art Director & Founder DREAM
Txema and Cristina wanted a magazine that was both classic and bold at the same time. We respectively translated this into more traditional, airy pages, and a condensed use of text and composition. The contrast also found its representation into typeface, for which we used Bodoni Seventy-Two by ITC in order to refer to the classical, and Benton Sans Condensed by Font Bureau giving the editorial a feel of fanzine and punk. For the grid, we found inspiration in visuals of authoritarian architecture, translated into a use of straight and boxed lines.
“For every human, objects host a compelling emotional power. Pictures can only crystalise a part of this inner force, without disclosing it completely. Working on a publication that spins around such a interesting universe of matter and emotion is always a great commission.”
Albert Folch, Founder & Art Director Folch
Cristina stresses that they are conscious of DREAM’s occidental perspective, focussing mostly on modern, first world conceptualisations of possession and matter. With this in mind, photographer Txema took things to a next explorative level, and so, TRAVEL was born; a book travelling across cultures and its relationships to objects, founded deep in an almost anthropological interest. In the first issue of Travel, Txema takes us to South Africa, where objects are carried on heads and materials re-utilized infinitely.
We wanted the publication to be an object in itself through carefully executed production work. Produced by Artifact, DREAM is a 160 pages soft cover magazine (19,5x28cm) with a rustic binding. For its paper we chose a G Print mat paper combining both the 115 and 250 grams weight. As for TRAVEL, Artifact produced a hard cover publication of 96 pages (18,9×27,4cm), printed on G print mat paper of 150 grams. For the end paper Acroprint’s milk white was used, while the cover was made out of Brillianta’s 4192 with the cover picture embossed on top of it and printed on Splendorlux’s premium white of 180 grams. In the middle of TRAVEL there’s also a four-page spread. The whole is bound with 2.5 flat spine. Print run of a 1000 pieces for each publication.
